Chiang Dao
We are currently staying at a nature reserve in Chiang Dao, right beneath Thailand's third highest mountain which has incredible peaks and is absolutely prestine. The little resort we are staying at has little bungalos where we sleep, a small pool, swinging benches and hammocks etc. It is amazing and much different from where we will be next. Our next village is where the Karen tribe resides, and is lacking electricity as well as many other amenities we are used to back home. It is at this village where our group will complete a microhydro project. Basically we will provide the village with electricity, something they have never yet experienced in their remote land. It will be difficult but extremely rewarding. Before Chiang Dao we were in Thailand's second largest city, Chiang Dao, where the infamous night market takes place. This city is wild and never sleeps. It has so much character and is a blast, luckily we will get to spend a few more nights there at some point. The night market goes on for what seems to be miles and both sides of the street are lined with vendors in tiny 3ft by 8ft stalls. Relationships among the vendors are very important and they look out for each othere, therefore lots of prices are set because if someone underminds their neighbor then the whole community will outcast them. It is a very interesting dynamic and so many unique goods are sold, I would encourage everyone to check this place out at some point, it literally blows your mind. Lately I have been reading about Hindu and Buddist mythology and philosophy, as well as interviewing locals and taking field notes. Therefore I think my project is coming along well, it is hard to say this early in though. Ok well time is up but I shall write again shortly!

Glad to hear you are doing well and having a fun and interesting trip. The hydro-electric project sounds really cool will surely benefit the people. I'm very proud of you for deciding to undertake this amazing adventure. Please continue to update us whenever you can and take care. Love, Pops. ps. now the natives can finally charge their cellphones and ipods! :)
ReplyDeleteHow come Pops always comments before me? I have you on my reader and rock a laptop with a remote wireless pack and he still beats me! I'm in Napa. By the sounds of it we are in very similar environs. Except here the wine vendors constantly undermine each other. And the community of restaurants are always trying to steal their neighbors customers! I had to decided between a juicy steak and a beet salad earlier..(WWCD?) It's raining, we are having dinner at a famous restaurant tonight (same chef as french laundry), we head to San Fran on Wednesday. I'm glad you are doing well, talk to you soon..
ReplyDeleteHmmmmm....
ReplyDeleteHow come Pops AND Brother commented before me? Must not be on my game. Next post, I win.
Anyhoo, glad you are continuing to enjoy experiencing life outside the US of A. Always cool to see how others live and communicate with one another. Unlike you and brother, I'm at home on Queen Anne. Just back from another day with argumentive little students fighting over pencils. I was tempted to stick one in my eye today...hahaha! Miss your face mucho and I would be tickled to receive a PERSONAL email sooner rather than later. Ya know, the juicy details of everything...how are the "arms?" ahha
love ya and be safe!
